Reunification Roadmap

A step-by-step path to help you stay organized, strengthen connections, and support your recovery journey — one milestone at a time.

Please note: This roadmap is a support and organization tool, not a legal guide or guarantee. Reunification decisions depend on many individual factors and vary by state. Always work with your caseworker and legal advocate.

1. Stabilize

Build the foundation: housing, sobriety, mental health support, and safety.

  • Secure stable housing
  • Begin or continue treatment / recovery program
  • Establish a support network
  • Attend mental health appointments as needed

2. Comply with Your Case Plan

Stay consistent with everything your caseworker and court require.

  • Complete required parenting classes
  • Submit to drug testing as scheduled
  • Attend all court dates and case reviews
  • Keep documentation of every step you complete

3. Strengthen the Relationship

Use every visit and interaction to rebuild trust and connection.

  • Attend all scheduled visitations
  • Stay present and engaged during visits
  • Communicate consistently within approved guidelines
  • Use the Vision Board and Constellation Builder to stay focused on your "why"

4. Build Life Skills

Show the court and yourself that you're ready for day-to-day responsibility.

  • Complete Life Skills and Job Readiness courses
  • Secure stable employment or income
  • Build a realistic household budget
  • Create a safe, child-ready home environment

5. Prepare for Transition

The final stretch — getting ready for increased time and eventual reunification.

  • Work with your caseworker on a transition plan
  • Gradually increase unsupervised time as approved
  • Set up ongoing support for after reunification
  • Celebrate how far you've come — you earned this
